Cluny Shuttle Motif

by Mimi Dillman

I designed this pattern in June of 1999, when Georgia Seitz challenged me to send in a pattern for beginners to practice cluny leaves. I didn’t want to overwhelm them with too many! This pattern also appears in the upcoming Tat_Chat book.

I did this one in 20 Manuela, shuttle and ball, and it’s 3″ across.

Explanatory note: cluny leaf (12) means 12 passes of the shuttle in a round-trip (right to left, then left to right counts as round trip). And don’t forget that smaller thread will mean smaller picots!

Round 1: R 4ds, long p (1/4″), 4ds, cl, rw. *Ch 4ds, sm p, 4ds, rw. R 4ds, join to long p, 4ds, cl, rw* repeat from * to * 5 times until you have 6 rings and 5 chains. Ch 4ds, p, 4ds and cut and tie to base of first r.

Round 2: (I began with the ring just after a leaf, and will end with a leaf) **R 4ds, long p (1/4″), 4ds, sm p, 4ds, long p (1/4″) 4ds, cl, rw. *Ch 8ds, rw. R 4ds, j to 2nd long p of prev r, 4ds, sm p, 4ds, long p, 4ds, cl, rw. Ch 4ds, j to p of chain of previous round, 4ds, rw. R 4ds, j to 2nd long p of prev r, 4ds, sm p, 4ds, long p, 4ds, cl, rw.* Repeat from * to * once more (2 joins to inner round so far), joining the chain of 4ds-j-4ds to the next p in inner round. Ch 8 ds, rw. R 4ds, j to 2nd long p of prev r, 4ds, sm p, 4ds, long p, 4ds, cl, rw. Cluny leaf (12). J to next p of previous rnd. Cluny leaf (12).**

Repeat from ** to ** once more. You should have joined to all 6 p on the outside of the inner round. Cut and tie to base of first ring in the round.

Round 3: Here’s where 2 shuttles are best – 2nd shuttle will make the rings at the points lie better.
**R 4ds, j to 1st p of 1st ring made, 8ds, j to last p of last ring made, 4ds, cl. Opposite this ring, make a 2nd ring using 2nd shuttle of 3ds, sm p, 5ds, p,5ds, sm p, 3ds, cl, rw. Switch back to 1st shuttle. Ch 3ds, j to sm p of prev. ring, 9 ds. *Lock join to p on next ring. Ch 12 ds* 5 more times. Lock join to p of last ring before a leaf. Ch 9ds, sm p, 3ds, rw.**

Repeat from ** to ** once more. At the end you will cut and tie to the base of the first ring made.

This sample also looks nice if in the 3rd round you leave out the rings that form the points of the shuttle, and make those joining chains without the sm p (12 ds instead of 9ds-3ds or vice-versa). You get a nice oval, and no need for using the 2nd shuttle (you can use shuttle and ball only).
